What does print-ready artwork setup actually involve

Jobs come back from a printer for the same handful of reasons, over and over. The picture was pulled off a website, so it prints soft and pixelly. The colours were built for a screen, so the bright red turns brick. There is no bleed, so a white hairline runs down one edge where the guillotine landed. The font was never embedded, so somebody else’s font turned up in its place. Setting artwork up for print means going through all of that before it costs you a wasted run, then handing over something the press can take without ringing you about it. If you already have a file, it gets opened, checked and corrected rather than started again. If the design came from a mate with a laptop, that is fine, it just needs the dull work doing to it. And the finished artwork is yours, so next time you order you send that same file and nothing shifts.

I made it myself in Word, is that any use

It is a start. Word files can be rebuilt into something a press will accept, and it is usually quicker than starting from a blank page. Send it over and you’ll be told either way.

Everyone keeps saying bleed, what is it

Extra background running past the trim line. Paper shifts a fraction as it gets cut, and without that overlap you get a thin white edge down one side of every copy.

Can I take the file to a different printer

Yes. You own it, so nobody is holding your artwork hostage. Say which printer you are using and it gets set up to their spec rather than a generic one.
